The Fundamentals of Insurance is recognized in most Canadian provinces as the premier pre-licensing study course for beginning general insurance brokers.

The Fundamentals of Insurance course is different from other courses offered. It is not an in-depth study of insurance wordings presently in use, it focuses primarily on the insurance needs of the consumer. You will follow the lives of the Butlers, a hypothetical family, who serves as an example to illustrate the workings of various insurance concepts. The intent of this strategy is to break down the barriers of learning that are inherent in technical or specialized disciplines such as insurance.

Starting with the history of insurance, this course will guide you through definitions, functions, major classes of and the organization of insurance.

Topics also include:

  • Introduction to General Insurance
  • Insurance Contracts
  • Role of Government in the Insurance Industry
  • Insurance Process
  • Common Characteristics of Property Insurance Policies
  • Personal Property (habitational) Insurance
  • Commercial Property Insurance
  • Principles of Legal Liability
  • Intro to Liability Insurance
  • Liability Insurance Policies
  • Accident & Sickness Insurance
  • Intro to Automobile Insurance
  • Automobile Insurance - The Policy
  • Automobile Insurance
  • Statutory Conditions & Endorsements
  • Regulation of Brokers

Presently in Nova Scotia, the Fundamentals of Insurance is the pre-licensing study material a student must understand prior to challenging the General Insurance Exam.    [ top ]
