Distracted driving is quickly becoming a greater risk than drinking in Canada. What is distracted driving? Distracted driving is anything that takes the driver’s attention away from the road. We all know the temptation of reaching for a ringing phone, looking for change for toll stations or even passing items to children and passengers. All of these things are considered distractions, and all are preventable. Like anything else it just takes planning and patience.
Some tips to help you avoid being distracted include:
- Allow plenty of travel time and review directions prior to leaving or program them into you GPS
- Keep the vehicle tidy and secure loose objects in their proper place or in the trunk
- Prepare children with everything they need prior to driving and secure pets in the back seat.
- Preset your radio and climate controls, make sure you are familiar with items on the dashboard
- Allow phone calls to go to voicemail and do not text, surf the web or read emails
- Do not eat, drink or perform personal hygiene (shave, apply makeup, brush hair)
- Do not smoke
- Make pit stops to eat, stretch and return calls
It only takes a second for tragedy to strike so pay attention to the road while driving.
