Before you head off into the sun, be sure to take precautions to lessen the possibility of a break-in while you’re away.  These include:

  • Cancel deliveries and / or arrange for a family member or neighbour to pick up your mail.
  • Have someone remove the snow from walkways and driveways.
  • Use electronic timers to have lights come on and off to mimic normal household activities.
  • Have someone park in your driveway while you’re away.
  • Have someone check your home every few days to ensure everything is still locked up tight.
  • Top up the oil tank or ensure your primary source of heat will not be interrupted while you are away.
  • Store valuables securely in a safety deposit box offsite.
  • Double check that all doors and windows are locked and that any alarm systems are functioning properly.
  • Don’t post on social media sites about your trip or tell strangers.
