Before you head off into the sun, be sure to take precautions to lessen the possibility of a break-in while you’re away. These include:
- Cancel deliveries and / or arrange for a family member or neighbour to pick up your mail.
- Have someone remove the snow from walkways and driveways.
- Use electronic timers to have lights come on and off to mimic normal household activities.
- Have someone park in your driveway while you’re away.
- Have someone check your home every few days to ensure everything is still locked up tight.
- Top up the oil tank or ensure your primary source of heat will not be interrupted while you are away.
- Store valuables securely in a safety deposit box offsite.
- Double check that all doors and windows are locked and that any alarm systems are functioning properly.
- Don’t post on social media sites about your trip or tell strangers.
