When students go off to university it’s stressful for them as well as parents. You’ve had countless conversations about what to expect, but are you prepared for the unexpected?

Be sure to check with your college or universities residence to ensure you meet all their requirements. If you are living off-campus make sure you have a tenant’s package.  These packages are in place to protect your belongings and liability for your actions.  No one plans to leave the tub running, have the washing machine overflow or host thirty people unexpectedly for a party; but it does happen and there are consequences.  Your insurance broker can ensure you have the proper coverage so you’re not on the hook for damages caused by your actions or your guests’.

Today, most students also move out with pricy electronics and gadgets, and new items purchased to make their surroundings feel more like home.  These items can be expensive to replace if stolen or damaged.  It’s a good idea to speak with your insurance broker about all eventualities and understand the many protections provided to you by a tenant package.  This will make the move just a little less stressful for all.

If you plan to live in residence, it’s still best to contact your broker. Your broker will help you determine if your family’s home insurance policy will provide adequate coverage for your belongings and personal liability while you are temporarily away at school.
