Blog > Swimming Pools - Beating the Summer Heat
![]() |
Swimming pools are a great way to beat the summer heat, but make sure you consider the risks as well. The installation of a pool can increase the value of your home, but with it comes added risk and responsibilities. It’s important for homeowners to speak with their insurance broker to ensure they are covered.
Before purchasing a pool make sure you check with your town or municipality to find out about safety standards, permits and building codes. Before installation contact your insurance broker to discuss additional liability insurance and what is covered.
Although a pool will provide hours of fun and relaxation, homeowners should also follow these common sense tips:
- Make sure your pool is secure and not easily accessible – for instance install a fence and locked gate. These items can differ depending on where you live, so be sure to check with your town or municipality on requirements.
- Never let anyone swim alone.
- Do not leave children unattended by a pool, as it only takes a second for tragedy to happen.
- Make sure life-saving equipment is near the pool and you know how to use it.
- Properly store all pool maintenance equipment and products.
- Investigate solid safety pool covers and alarms to provide additional protection.
- Remove or lock steps and ladders from above ground pools when not in use.
- Take first aid training/life saving courses and educate your family on swimming safety.
Remember, whether you’re adding a swimming pool, trampoline or other items that increase your liability to speak with your insurance broker. Don’t be left exposed.
