Roads are affected by extreme changes in temperatures resulting in potholes. Since it’s not always possible to avoid potholes, here are some tips to help minimize damage:
- Never slam on your brakes. This can actually cause more damage to your vehicle.
- If you cannot avoid a pothole, slow down and let up on your brakes just before impact.
- Be sure to grip your steering wheel firmly to avoid losing control if you hit a pothole.
- Be careful of puddles during early spring as they can be hiding potholes in the road.
- Maintain the proper air pressure in your tires.
- Leave room in front of your vehicle so you are able to see upcoming hazards.
- Make sure your headlights are in good working order so you can see potholes and have time to slow down when driving at night.
Some telltale signs your car has been damaged by potholes:
- Frequent loss of air pressure.
- Visible bends or dents in your tire rims.
- You can feel vibrations in the steering wheel when driving.
- Your steering wheel is not aligned straight anymore.
Should I file an insurance claim?
- If you have collision coverage you can file a claim or pay for the repairs yourself. It is important to consider your deductible and the dollar value of the damage before making a claim.
- If you do file a claim, get as much information as possible, including taking photos of the damage and pothole. Photos could help speed up the claims process.
- Speak with your insurance Broker to discuss your specific coverage.
