Being involved in an accident can be a traumatic experience but knowing what to do in advance can help eliminate some of the stress. Make sure you carry your insurance information, pen, and paper in the glove box.
If you are in an accident first determine if anyone is injured. If there are injuries call 911 to obtain emergency assistance. If no one is injured and your car is drivable pull over to the side of the road out of traffic before exchanging information with others involved in the accident.
Stay calm and take down the following information:
- person’s name,
- address and phone numbers,
- driver’s license number and
- insurance information.
Remember to include
- the vehicles license plate number, as well as
- make and model.
- if there are witnesses obtain their contact information as well.
The next step is to document damage in detail. If possible take photos of the scene and vehicles to assist during the claims process. Some insurance brokerages offer online apps to collect critical information and report accidents directly.
If you are in an accident be sure to notify your insurance broker who will guide you through the claims process and answer questions related to your policy and coverage.
